Our design proposal attempts to tackle some of these essential issues of the tiny house on a micro and macro scale while providing a spatially efficient and comfortable dwelling for its inhabitants, aimed at (re)catalyzing a global renaissance for the tiny house movement. Here, we offer a simple yet unique design strategy that allows for adaptability, full customization, vertical densification, and layout expansion. This is achieved through a combination of an independent framed structural system, interchangeable panelized envelope, and digital technology.
By the nature of its design, our proposed design has the ability to occupy the rooftops of low-rise infrastructures or empty lots for a preestablished tenure, which may be financed in conjunction with communal land trust initiatives. These homes could exist either as individual dwelling units or stacked neighborhoods, retaining people within the city, providing mutual economic and socio-cultural benefits for the homeowners and the host community, resulting in a "Bilbao effect". Thereafter, they may relocate to individual lots within or outside the city with the financial savings from the living and operational costs of the tiny home compared to conventional options.
Overall, this design proposes an architecture that is modular yet local and unique, reflecting climate sensitivity and individual client needs and aesthetics, which gives agency to the owners while providing a variety of options of situation, usage, and density. Thereby subverting the narrative of tiny homes as inert boxes and facilitating its planning acceptance and widespread adoption as an affordable housing alternative.
